FM Series Fluorescent Dyes for High-Specificity Cell Membrane Labeling and Neuronal Tracking

The FM series fluorescent dyes, including FM 1-43, FM 2-10, FM 5-95, and FM 4-64, are lipophilic styrene-based dyes known for their non-toxic nature and specific application in labeling living cell membranes. These dyes are especially effective in plant samples, facilitating cell membrane labeling, neuronal tracer imaging, and tracking biological processes like endocytosis and exocytosis.

FM series dyes are water-soluble but non-fluorescent in aqueous solutions. However, once they bind to cell membranes or similar structures, they emit bright fluorescence, making them ideal for studying live cell membrane dynamics. Key advantages include:

  • High Specificity: Targeted binding to cell membranes.
  • Uniform Staining: Consistent and clear labeling across samples.
  • Bright Fluorescence: Strong signal for detailed imaging.

These dyes are widely used in living cell membrane studies, particularly with plant samples. In addition, the FM series can track neuronal cells via fluorescent signals. For example, in neurons that actively release neurotransmitters, the dye is internalized into recyclable vesicles, labeling the neuron’s terminals. This makes the FM dyes suitable for studying nerve-related physiological processes.

Taking FM 1-43 as an example, it enables high-specificity imaging of plant cell membranes, such as the root tip cells of onion, tobacco, rice, Arabidopsis, and other plants. It provides high-resolution imaging of cell membranes, including leaf epidermal cells and more.
