In recent years, the synthesis and application of aromatic hydrocarbons with zigzag rings connected head to tail by benzene rings have been widely explored. Extended zonal hydrocarbons replace part of the six-membered rings in zonal hydrocarbons with non-six-membered rings, and have attracted much attention due to their unique structures.

In 2023, Professor Wang Meixiang's research group at Tsinghua University made breakthrough progress in the field of synthesis of extended ring hydrocarbons. They used the "bridge-building across the bay" strategy developed in the laboratory and used resor[4][4][4]cycloocttrienone with C4 symmetry (Figure 1 E), and derivatized it. This type of extended ring-band molecule not only has excellent chiral photophysical properties, with a luminescence asymmetry factor (|glum|) as high as 0.01, but can also selectively recognize cesium ions, providing a new idea for the selective extraction of cesium ions. [1], the research results have been published in Angew. Chem. Int. Ed.
